May we all live in the shining belief of gratitude for small things–for an afternoon with one’s wife who has fully become partner and friend–who allows for differences in my life and hers, who finally in allowing that my beliefs threaten no one. We are two and one in our old age, with the life we never saw coming. Beauty in our little town abounds as she sketches first her hands holding half-peeled orange and pealing in her aging hand. She loves me as the best friend who has been with her 38 years, under one roof just less than 38 years. Oh, she put up with me and my horrid drinking for 8 years, even drinking with me for a time, and now that’s over some 30 years and 8 months, and in July, with the help of God Almighty, through His Son Jesus who left me His Holy Spirit, a true Spirit upon whom I can call the Name of Jesus for strength and understanding.
I understand this woman’s need, she needs to be free of me and still care for me. We form a partnership in the words of Karl Rogers who coined the title On Becoming Partners. This title came after the singular On Becoming A Person, and now we are two together, one alone, partners and people, ever first that person. This is God’s union.
